Push, Cover, Juice — A Plain-English Betting Glossary
A Plain-English Betting Glossary
Betting has its own slang, and most of it is simpler than it sounds. Here are the terms you'll meet on FreezyPicks and across the sports-betting world.
The basics
- Stake / wager — the amount of money you put on a bet.
- Juice / vig — the sportsbook's built-in cut, usually baked into a -110 price. It's how the house makes money. More in Vig-Free Probability.
- Favorite — the team expected to win; shown with a minus price.
- Underdog (dog) — the team expected to lose; shown with a plus price.
- Even money — a price of +100: win the same amount you risk.
Outcomes
- Cover — when a team beats the point spread, not just the game.
- Push — a tie against the line; your stake is refunded.
- Backdoor cover — a late, meaningless score that flips a spread result.
Bet types
- Moneyline — pick the straight-up winner.
- Spread (ATS) — pick a team to beat the points handicap.
- Total (Over/Under) — bet the combined score, not the winner.
- Prop — a bet on something specific, often a player's stat line. See Player Props Explained.
- Parlay — several bets combined into one; all must win to pay out.
Market and money
- Line — the current spread, total, or price.
- Line movement — when the number shifts as money comes in.
- Sharp money — bets from professional, winning bettors. We track it via ticket vs money splits.
- Public / square money — bets from casual recreational bettors.
- Steam — a sudden, sharp move across many books at once.
- Closing line — the final price before kickoff; beating it is a sign of a good bet. See Closing Line Value.
Value and bankroll
- Edge — how much better your estimated probability is than the market's.
- Value (+EV) — a bet where the payout is bigger than the true risk warrants.
- Unit — a standard bet size, usually 1% of your bankroll. See Bankroll Management.
